Varicose Veins

Twisted, enlarged veins visible beneath the skin surface

What is it?

Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins just below the surface of the skin. They most commonly affect the legs. While often considered a cosmetic concern, they can cause pain, discomfort, and lead to more serious vascular problems.

Symptoms

  • Dark purple or blue twisted veins
  • Aching, heavy feeling in legs
  • Burning, throbbing, muscle cramping
  • Worsened pain after standing
  • Itching around veins
  • Skin ulcers (severe cases)

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Weak or damaged valves in veins
  • Age
  • Sex (more common in women)
  • Pregnancy
  • Family history
  • Obesity
  • Long periods of standing

Diagnosis

Physical examination and Doppler ultrasound to assess valve function and blood flow direction.

Treatment Options

Self-care (compression, exercise, leg elevation)
Sclerotherapy
Laser treatment
Endovenous ablation (laser or radiofrequency)
Phlebectomy

When to Seek Medical Advice

See a doctor if your varicose veins are painful, if there are skin changes, sores, or significant swelling — early treatment prevents complications.
