Lymphangitis

Inflammation and infection of the lymphatic vessels

What is it?

Lymphangitis is an inflammation of the lymphatic channels that occurs as a result of infection at a site distal to the channel. It is most often caused by bacterial infection, typically Streptococcus.

Symptoms

  • Red streaks extending from a wound
  • Fever and chills
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Tenderness along lymph channels
  • Blisters in affected area

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Bacterial infections (Streptococcus, Staphylococcus)
  • Fungal infections
  • Parasitic infections
  • Open wounds or skin injuries

Diagnosis

Diagnosed clinically based on symptoms and signs. Blood cultures, wound cultures, and imaging may be used.

Treatment Options

Antibiotics (oral or intravenous)
Wound care and drainage
Elevation of affected limb
Pain management

When to Seek Medical Advice

Seek immediate medical care if you notice red streaks spreading from a wound, especially with fever — this indicates a spreading infection requiring prompt antibiotic treatment.
